01 · MASK SETUP
Click the subject. Add corrections until the selection holds.
Start with a single click on the object you want to isolate. The first selection is rarely perfect — add positive points to extend coverage and negative points to push the edge back. Two or three corrections is usually enough on a clean frame.
02 · TRACK
Press Track. Scrub the timeline. Watch the mask hold.
Once the reference frame looks right, run Track to propagate the mask forward and backward through the shot. The first pass is rough by design — its job is to give you a draft mask across every frame so you can spot drift.
03 · MASK REVIEW
Switch views to see what's actually being selected.
The translucent overlay is good for a quick read, but Mask, Matte, and Compare views are where you catch real problems — drift along edges, missed wisps of hair, semi-transparent regions. Review the whole shot in at least two views before refining.
04 · REFINE EDGES
Hair, soft edges, motion blur — handled with one pass.
Refine recovers the detail a hard mask can't capture: flyaway hair, fur, semi-transparent fabric, motion-blurred limbs. Apply it after the base track is stable, then dial in Adjust Edges presets for the kind of edge you have.
05 · CLEANUP
Mark what to remove. Run Cleanup. Review.
Cleanup uses the inverse of a mask — instead of isolating a subject, you select an object or region you want gone, and the surrounding plate is reconstructed across frames. Use it for boom mics, rigs, signage, or unwanted passersby.
06 · EXPORT
Pick the format that matches what's downstream.
Four export formats cover almost every pipeline. The right one depends on whether you're handing off to a compositor, dropping into an edit, or feeding another tool. Pick once and the workspace remembers it for this project.
